Contexture Zine
Contexture is a Literary & Arts Magazine, created to showcase student work. The design is unique and bold, while highlighting the work being shown inside.
The cover designed started with a foundation of a collage of various sizes of numbers and letters—inspiring me to take pieces from black & white film photographs I had taken and place them around the collage to give it more depth.
Bold color
The red used brings out the vibrancy and bold edge the zine has to it. Sharp lines and collage-like images are featured throughout the publication.
Showcasing student work & design
This layout challenged me to be experimental with design, while still maintaining a focus on the short story featured on this spread. This shows the opportunity I had to play with text sizing of call-out quotes, and integrating it with the feel of the zine.
Challenges and process
Balancing the bold design with other artwork that is meant to stand out and stand alone was a challenge, because I didn’t want the design of the magazine itself to overpower the work. Instead I wanted them to blend well together, so that as a whole it was cohesive. Again, starting as a black & white collage, it went through a few revisions to bring in more color to each spread and to really emphasize the eye-catching page design.
