The Time Machine: Book Cover
The Time Machine, by H.G. Wells, book cover design. Inspired by the climactic end of the novel: a black hole and tentacles that emerge (among other creatures in the novel).
I included a mix of textures and brushes on the Procreate app, to give the cover depth and character, highlighting a few details of the novel.
Hand-drawn type and illustration
My goal was to stay true to the nature of Wells’ sci-fi novels, while also having it be illustrative. I was able to warp some of my illustrations, to further push the theme of time travel and different dimensions.
Challenges and process
Having not read this book, or any of H.G. Wells’ books before, I had to do a little research on his writing and read a few different summaries to get a better understanding of the plot. I started focusing on the tentacles, and then manipulated them and their placement to give the cover a little more variety and elude to the mystery and suspense of the ending. I experimented with different styles of illustration and handwritten type, but found that this style and color choice worked best for the novel.
