Social Awareness: Helping Refugees in Harrisonburg
Collaboration with Church World Service in Harrisonburg—mailer created to encourage and inform Harrisonburg residents of ways to help refugees adjust to life in a new city.
Structure & Design Choice
This mailer was created to reach residents in Harrisonburg; a fun application to address a topic that is very current today. I wanted the statistics to stand out and really encourage people to take action in helping refugees and to be aware of the diversity we have in Harrisonburg. This could also be picked up directly from the Church World Service office to better inform volunteers, which would also cut down on production and distribution cost.
Monochromatic and clean
This creates a branding for the exhibition that could be carried across other advertising materials for the show.
Bright Color & Bold Imagery
I wanted the focus to be on the people featured in the booklet, so I used high contrast and black & white images, keeping orange as an accent color.
Challenges and process
I experimented with a couple different paper types, and found that some worked better than others. Though I liked the feel of more textured papers, ones with slightly less texture worked much better, especially for something that readability is very important. Also, with there being so many parts to the deliverable, I didn’t want any information to be looked over. The end result has a variety of information on each piece, so that it doesn’t seem redundant, and it encourages the viewer to really explore all angles and all pieces of the design.
